Overview

The Pilar Museum stands witness to the rich cultural heritage of Pilar hillock, showcasing the history of the Shilaharas (765 – 1020 AD) and the Kadambas (1050 – 1354 AD), whose capital city, Govapuri, was located around the hillock. The museum traces the history of the hillock through the Muslim and Portuguese conquests to present-day Goa. Artefacts dating back up to the 2nd Millennium BC provide a continuous politico-religious history of Pilar hillock and Goa. The Pilar Monastery, built by the Franciscan Capuchins (Capuchos) in 1613 and occupied until 1835, and later by the Carmelites from 1856 to 1887, was finally made the headquarters of the Society of Pilar in 1890 by the decree of D. A. S. Valente, the first Patriarch of Goa. The society also acted as the President of the Governing Council of Goa in the absence of the Portuguese Governor General.
