Overview
Netravali Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the six essential wildlife sanctuaries in the state and is located in the Sanguem Taluka region of the South-Eastern part of Goa. Netravali is home to a diverse family of flora and fauna of the world. Secure from persecution or harm, a plethora of animals and plants exist under the parasol of a clear sky in this sanctuary. It is a great place to visit with family as it is both adventurous and educational. Along with being a significant nature conservation hub, Netravali Wildlife Sanctuary is also a highly crucial freshwater source to Goa. It supposedly takes its name from the Netravali tributary of the Zuari river.
Highlights
- Spread over an area of 211 sq. kms.
- Best visited during monsoon season from late June to September
- Accommodation is available in forest rest houses run by the GTDC
- The Sanctuary has Dandeli-Anshi Tiger Reserve of Karnataka on its eastern side; Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary, Goa on its southern side and Bhagwan Mahaveer Sanctuary and Mollem National Park on its northern side
- Among the wildlife to be found here are Gaur, Malabar giant squirrel, four-horned antelope or chousingha, leopard, black sloth bear, etc.
- The region is also a home to several birds: Malayan night heron, grey-headed bulbul, Nilgiri wood pigeon, white-bellied blue flycatcher, great pied hornbill, white-bellied treepie, and others
